What is the exact curriculum and how can self-directed learning ensure essential academic progress?
As we strive to create a self-directed learning environment, there will be no fixed curriculum aside from the online school. The curriculum of the online school covers key academic subjects: English (Reading, Writing, Grammar), Math, and Science. Additionally, we will offer immersive Portuguese “lessons” through interactive play and self-motivated learning with a Portuguese tutor or native-speaking assistant. The remainder of the curriculum will develop organically, driven by the interests and motivations of the individual children.
Children will have the opportunity to explore their interests and passions through our diverse learning materials, including books, art supplies, gardening tools, science kits, instruments, Math manipulatives, and toys. They will engage in play and nature exploration, benefit from our monthly immersive exploration themes, and eventually participate in various extracurricular activities that we plan to introduce.
Our learning facilitators will collaborate with the children to establish curriculums and projects that harness these interests, promoting self-motivated learning. In doing so, children will naturally acquire the fundamental skills typically taught in traditional schools.
Why don’t you just open a democratic school without the online school?
Opening an accredited private school in Madeira is very challenging and time-consuming. Additionally, the need to adhere to the Portuguese curriculum would make establishing a democratic school nearly impossible. Therefore, we have partnered with CambriLearn, a COGNIA-accredited online school that offers highly flexible and individualized curriculums. This allows compulsory schooling to be completed within approximately one to two hours of the school day, freeing up the remainder of the day for self-directed learning in nature.
